13 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Moving Company

When it comes to hiring movers, you may be tempted to compare companies solely on quotes. While cost is an important factor, so is time and reputation. Here’s what to ask up front if you are considering hiring a moving company.

1. Are They Licensed and Insured?

In the US, companies that move household goods across state lines are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. If you are not moving across state lines, licensing requirements can differ from state to state. You can visit fmcsa.dot.gov to check a mover’s credentials.

A moving company declining to provide their insurance details or license number can be a red flag.

2. Can the Moving Company Provide References?

In addition to asking for references, it’s also a smart idea to review the Better Business Bureau to see if there is anything about the moving company you are looking to work with.

3. Ask What They Cannot Move

Some companies have limits on what they will ship. You may have possessions that may be too delicate, flammable, or valuable for the company to move. This could include, but not be limited to things like:

  • fine art
  • collectible items
  • musical instruments like pianos
  • propane tanks
  • fireworks and explosives
  • lamp oil
  • motor oil
  • charcoal
  • batteries
  • nail polish
  • hot tubs
  • live plants
  • fertilizer
  • pets

Every company is different, so it is important to know what their policies are. While this may not be a deal breaker, it’s good to know ahead of time so you can make a plan.

4. Will Your Moving Company Offer Price Matching?

If you get all of your quotes in writing, you can ask if companies offer price matching.

You may also ask about any discounts that they offer, such as discounts for veterans.

5. How Does Your Company Calculate Pricing?

Most companies will calculate pricing based on a few different factors. These may include:

  • Distance
  • Weight
  • Labor Rates
  • Time of Year

6. Can You Do An In-Person Estimate?

While many companies will be able to provide a quote over the phone or online, having someone evaluate your home in person can identify any potential obstacles. Meeting with them in person is also a good opportunity to ask about any extra fees. This can include things like a heavy-item charge or a stairs charge.

7. Will Your Company Do the Packing and Moving?

If you think this is an unnecessary question, think again. Some moving companies will outsource part of the job to another company. Be sure you know up front what services they will be providing, and how much experience they have.

8. Can You Guarantee A Delivery Date?

If you need your belongings delivered by a certain date, be sure to ask for it in writing.

9. What If I Need to Cancel?

Ask what they need for a deposit up front, and if they have a deadline for cancellations.

10. Do You Disassemble Furniture?

From your kitchen table to bedframes, some pieces of furniture need to be disassembled before moving. Ask if the moving company offers this service, or if you will need to prepare for this step.

11. Do I Have to Use Special Boxes?

If you are self-packing your items, ask if there are any particular boxes you should be using. Some companies also have instructions for what type of packing material to use.

12. What Will They Do If Items Are Damaged?

If something breaks during the move, what is their policy? Ask what precautions they will make for fragile items or large furniture.

13. What Payment Methods Do They Accept?

Ask if they accept cash and checks only, or if they will take credit cards.
