A surety bond is a three-party agreement in which a surety company agrees to pay one party (the obligee) a certain amount if a second party (the principal) fails to meet a specified obligation, established in an agreed upon contract between the obligee and principal.  The surety bond protects the obligee against losses resulting from the principal’s failure to meet the obligation.  The three parties and their relationships are depicted in the infographic:
