11 Strategies to Help Entrepreneurs Potentially Gain More Views on Social Media

Tired of not getting the number of views that you want on social media? As an entrepreneur, you likely know just how important and influential social media can be. Some brands seem to always get it “right”, while your time investments and efforts may be falling flat. It can be frustrating to keep making content when it seems like no one is commenting, sharing, or even seeing your posts. Here are some strategies that you can try to potentially gain more views.

1. Consider Short Form Video for Social Media

For many, short form video is the media form of choice right now. It’s popular on several different platforms, including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and even YouTube. With short form video, you can capture attention fast, and share tips and information.

With so many people creating content, viewer’s attention spans have grown shorter. Using short form video can provide your audience with concise value, capture their attention, and keep them coming back for more.

2. Keep Selling to a Minimum (15-20% of All Posts)

You wouldn’t watch a television channel or streaming service that played ads 24/7. Treat your audience how you would want to be treated. Selling products or booking services may be the goal of your business, but you will drive people away or bore them if all you do is sell. Keep a majority of your posts entertaining or educational.

3. Answer Questions You Always Get on Social Media

As a business owner, what questions come up the most often? These could be things like:

  • How do you clean your product?
  • How often should you replace your product?
  • How is the product made?
  • Who is your product for?

Write down a list of your frequently asked questions. If you have employees, you can poll them as well to see what they respond with. This can help you build a blueprint for topics for your content on social media.

4. Engage with Other Pages (and Your Followers)

If you are looking to grow your following organically on social media platforms, don’t just drop your content, then duck out. Yes, this does take more time, but “posting and ghosting” as it is called, is like showing up to a dinner party with a side dish, then leaving before any of the conversation starts. You want to find other pages and businesses that align well with your brand. If you don’t already follow these businesses, think about ones with complementary or similar products or services, or ones that are your neighbor geographically. If you meet other business owners at networking events or tradeshows, following them on social media can help to build that relationship.

Make it a point to “like” posts from other businesses, and leave thoughtful, engaging comments. You should also be engaging with comments on your own posts, and responding as necessary.

5. Create Content Your Audience Can See Themselves In

You know that feeling when you see something and instantly connect? It can be tempting when making content for social media to create something to entertain everyone, but it can be more engaging to pick a niche audience and really show them that you have been there, done that. Ask yourself who your audience specifically is, your ideal customer. This could be:

  • People prioritizing health and fitness
  • People juggling two kids and a job
  • Adults that grew up in the 90’s
  • People that spoil their dog
  • People obsessed with true crime
  • People working office jobs
  • People that play in garage bands

Try to create humor around the topics only your niche group would get. If you would share the video with a friend or it would make you chuckle, you know you are creating some relatable content.

6. Share Content with Community Groups on Social Media

If you are trying to reach a certain geographic location, you might try joining a few community groups on social media. Search for your city name to see what related groups there are. Sharing your posts to these helps to get your content in front of a new audience, and may encourage people to follow your page. Many of these community groups will have rules or a moderator, so be sure that you are following the rules or you will risk being ejected from the group.

Like we shared above, don’t sell all the time in community groups. Use it to share information that may be entertaining or educational first, and then share content that sells.

7. Take a Look at What Has Worked

There are dozens of articles and videos on the internet talking about social media tips, but none of them have a first-hand look at your business. Every business has unique characteristics, goals, and problems, which is why it is important to look at what has worked for you.

Collect a snapshot of your previous posts from the past six months. What posts received the most engagement? Which posts received no engagement? Is there a common denominator? Does your audience respond to videos, stills, or mostly text graphics?

8. Focus on Gaining Attention in the First Three Seconds

You may have the exact answers your audience is looking for, but you need to capture their attention fast. Consider starting your video with the most surprising fact related to your topic, a question, or something else that will capture their attention.

9. Add Subtitles to Your Videos

Your audience may be scrolling videos on silent. Whether it is late at night, they are on public transport, or they don’t have headphones, statistics point to a majority of viewers watching with the sound off.

Adding subtitles to your videos means more people will get the message you are trying to share. Many video editing apps have the options to add captions, while some social media platforms offer the option as well.

10. Get Serious About Your Thumbnails

Start editing your video thumbnails like someone designing a book cover or movie poster. If you don’t know what the thumbnail is, it is the image that will show before someone clicks on your video to play. Creating an engaging thumbnail that summarizes your video well or has a good hook can increase your CTR, or click through rate.

You can make video thumbnails using your favorite graphic design software. Remember to create something that can be read at small scale, even on a phone. Use fonts that are easy to read.

11. Be Authentic

Blame AI, years of over-edited photos, or digitally curated lives on people craving authenticity. There is a place for polish and branding, but people want to see what your product or service actually is.

If your product or service isn’t for everyone, tell them why that is. If your product or service has what some people would call a drawback, be transparent about that as well.
