Many photographers opt to just use their name as a business name. There are some pros to this, such as:
Here are some reasons why you may not want to use your name:
Tell family or friends your potential name. Is it easy to pronounce? Remember? Is it similar sounding to other businesses?
If the headache of a potential lawsuit isn’t enough to deal with, after discovering a duplicate name, you’ll have to rebrand- meaning replacing signage, business cards, advertising, and the like- which can be very expensive, especially as a new business.
Unfortunately, there is no all-encompassing place to search to see if a business name is taken. Start with a search on your favorite search engine to see if the name is taken. You can do a search of your state’s Secretary of State office. Here are some helpful links for states in the Northeast:
Focusing on a niche, area, or landmark may work today, but what about five or ten years down the road? Will you still be located at the same place?
What if you need to pivot your business, would your name still work?
Photographers face unique challenges and risks when working.
General liability insurance helps to provide your photography business with protection for certain third-party liability claims related to your business’s operations (for instance, if someone was injured resulting from a trip and fall accident inside your studio). Some general liability policies also include coverage for certain types of personal and advertising injuries, such as claims for defamation or copyright infringement.
Commercial property insurance can help protect your photography business against certain types of physical damage to your building and equipment. Regardless of whether you own the building or lease the space, commercial property insurance is a wise choice.
Our third-generation insurance agency has offices throughout the Northeast and Florida. Getting in touch with a local professional is as simple as filling out our form here. You can also find a list of phone numbers for all of our offices here.
Unfortunately, homeowners or renters insurance policies do not typically provide coverage for business equipment losses by flood or fire. If you have business property at your home, you should consider one or more business insurance policies. This may also be a good option for your business if you have clients coming to your home, as your homeowners or renters insurance policy may not cover claims or injuries that arise out of a home-based business.
