5 Tips for Boating with Your Dog

There’s no denying that some dogs love every minute of being out on the water. Whether you’re preparing to take your favorite four-legged sidekick out on the water for the first time, or your camera reel is full of photos of your dog lounging on your boat, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Be Sure Vaccines are Up to Date

Check with your vet to be sure that your dog is up to date on any necessary vaccines, especially if you will be using a busy marina.

2. Consider a Life Jacket for Your Pet

While life jackets are not legally required for dogs on a boat, there are several reasons you may want to consider having one handy. Even if your dog can swim, they may get tired. Having a life jacket with a handle can make it easier for you to retrieve your dog in  case  they are knocked overboard.

Look for a life jacket that fits your dog snug, but well, and has a handle, as well as a place to clip a leash. The jacket should meet the size and weight requirements of your dog.

3. Keep Your Furry Friend Hydrated and Cool

Bring a water dish and plenty of drinking water to keep your dog hydrated on longer trips.  Look for shaded areas on deck where they can take breaks, and know the signs of heat exhaustion.

4. Secure Your Dog when Docking

Docking a boat can be a tricky task. Your dog may jump from the boat, or get knocked overboard in the process. Secure them with a harness or leash, or put them in a safe area until the boat is fully docked.

5. Keep Your First Trips Short

Let your dog get used to the sights and smells of the boat. Once you know how your dog will react, you can plan for longer trips.

Insurance for Your Boat

Depending on what state you live in, you may or may not legally be required to have boat insurance. However, if you finance your boat or are storing it at a marina, they may require proof of insurance. Policies vary, but typically boat insurance covers a number of situations and incidents, including:

  • Collision
  • Boat Accessories
  • Fire
  • Theft
  •

To see what your boat insurance policy covers, you should carefully review it with your local insurance agent. At Cross Insurance, we work with over 100 different carriers, from national names to local companies.
